Jackson's Baby Blessing

We had the privilege of blessing Jackson in church on Sunday, January 19th.  We were not anticipating blessing him until the first Sunday inn February, however with Daniel and Carly moving to Utah, we felt it important to try and get the family together before they left.  Thankfully, all parties involved were pretty amenable to that plan, and we proceeded as scheduled!

The Before Shot (this is deja vu from another post I just put up....)  A seriously happy camper!  Full tummy clean diaper, no cares in the world!  Of course, in true baby form, when I took him out of his carset at church, I smelled the smell.....unmistakably baby poop, the bright organge variety.  For a moment, I though, okay, no biggie, probably pretty well contained in his huggies.  Just to be safe, though, I ran him to the mother's room to see if I could get in a quick change before the meeting started.  I am so glad I did-there was poop everywhere, and had I left it like that for another 10 minutes, it woul have stained his little outfit.  There is one teeny orange spot on his sock when he kicked during the changing.  Needless to say-I feel like we dodged a bullet with that one!

All stoic in his first tuxedo!  Jackson ended up being awake for the entire blessing thanks to the poop escapade (he had fallen asleep in his carseat on the way).  Didn't matter though-he was a happy camper and was wide eyes when Jared held him up in the traditional "show-everyone-your-cute-baby" pose.  It elicited a good chuckle from the crowd!

Jared's bessing was beautiful and certainly unique.  It was very focused on Jesus Christ:  learning of him, emulating, and having a testimony of him.  It was simply beautiful, and there was so much emotion in Jared's voice.  I was so very impressed with his words that I know the Lord wanted him to say, especially in terms of encouraging Jackson to follow the Savior in all things and to pray to know his will.  What a wonderful experience.
This is the best show I could get after church, with no one available to take the picture for me!  Oh well, at least everyone is there and smiling, though the angle is kind of weird!
The rest of these shots were taken throughout Jordan's cousin birthday that took place about an hour after church ended-again, a great chance to get all my family together before the Erickson's left town.  Although it was a packed house, it was a blast having everyone there, and Jackson was certainly appreciative....at least as appreciative as a baby can be!  Thanks to everyone who came to support Jackson!

This is probably my favorite baby blessing picture :)
Though this one is kinda hard to beat! ;)

A fantastic family picture that is only missing Jacob and Jennifer!
 I'm barefoot becuase I couldn't locate shoes-seriously.

The Super Long Bath Post

There are 26 pictures on this post because I just couldn't decide which ones I liked!  So this is, by far, the longest I have ever gone before giving a baby a true blue tub bath.  James was 7 weeks when this happened-7 weeks!  He's 11 weeks now, but I'll have post date this at some point.  Up until that point, I was pretty content sponge bathing him and washing his hair over the sink....it didn't seem worth it to fill up a bath all the way when that would do.  However, when he started developing a pretty crazy case of cradle cap, I decided to jump in with both feet (literally) and switch it up.

The Before Shot-pretty happy, though obliviously so.
The During Shots-the reader's digest version:  He loved the bath until I actually started soaping up his head and body-then, not so much and the only thing that calmed him down was sucking on my finger or having the washcloth laid over him like a towel and warm water being poured onto that.  Thankfully, that time period wasn't too long, and he was pretty content thereafter!  And I am sure you will all  appreciate the strategically placed washcloth, which is just a necessity in any first bath pictures.

Look at that strong kid trying to stand up!!!!

No, that's not pee, though it really looks like it, with a seriously unique camera angle!

He was losing it here, only calmed by that washcloth!
The After Shots-these are my favorites!

Cardiology Update

These are good pictures to go with a cardiology update for James!  We checked in with his cardiologist today for a run-of-the-mill echocardiogram and EKG.  We hadn't done an echo for a year, so it was important to get good images.  I was fully anticipating James to have a very hard time sitting for the echo.  H doesn't like strangers, but he loves to say NO as emphatically as possible before crying and refusing to do anything, even things he would normally like.  He can be very stubborn in this sense, and given that echos require an invasion of space, strangers, and touching, I did not expect any success....I expected to have to schedule an out-patient echo under sedation.  You can imagine my shock, then, when James ONLY cried to get his weight checked.  He sat perfectly still for his blood pressures-all four!  He sat perfectly still during the EKG and even helped peel the stickers off!  And yes, he sat perfectly stick for the entire echo-about 45 minutes, on my lap, eating the plethora of snacks I had packed, and watching Elmo (though he never watches TV).  He just impressed me to all ends, even when I had to crane his neck way up towards the ceiling,-he didn't care, just kept commenting on all the lights that were either working or broken.  So proud!
So the good news of the visit:  no issues with his coarc, or with his ASD, or even with the potential issue with his mitral valve. Though the pressure through that valve is ever so slightly higher than it should be, it is not enough to even be on the table.  All good news!
The not so great news:  James' aortic valve is doing worse.  His pressure gradient last time was around 25, which is fantastic-the lower the better.  It was in the high 40's when he was released from the hospital after heart surgery.  Today it was averaging between 55 and 60.  Now, Dr. Garn was quick to mention that there were moments when James' heart was down at that 25-30 range, and he also said it is hard to get good images of James' heart with his bone structure.  Regardless though, the fact of the matter is his valve is in fact worse, and its the first time it has been worse since surgery.  :( We knew this day was coming, and to some degree, I still felt like I was being hit with a mack truck (or whatever the phrae is).  Dr. Garn clarified for me that we were not in emergency mode, even with the worse numbers.  But it does mean we need to change our plan of attack and begin to consider future options.
So the plan now is to forgo our normal 6 month appointments/yearly echo, and come back in 4 months to repeat the echo and EKG.  If the numbers are the same, chances are likely we will ride it out another 4 months and repeat the echo again.  If the numbers are worse, we will move forward with surgery, which could mean one of two things.  We will either do a balloon via catheterization, which will give us a ton of information about his heart along with ballooning open the valve, thus buying time; or we will do the full valve replacement, which would require open heart surgery again.  The balloon is temporary, but less invasive.  The valve replacement is obviously very invasive, but would be permanant at least until James gets into his teenage years and needs the artificial valve replaced to match his growth.  After chatting with Dr. Garn, it seems much more likely that they will balloon first, since that will give him much needed information regarding what James' heart actually needs.  The only way we would move forward with valve replacement is if his heart gets significantly worse in the next 4 months.

So.....yeah.  Its hard to wrap my mind around this, and yet I am grateful I have time to do so.  Last time was so rushed and hurried-I couldn't think, much less consider options, second opinions, and preparing.  This time around, I am already considering how I can prepare James mentally and emotionally for heart surgery, who we will get a second and probably third opinion from, and how we will balance family and work to accomodate a huge surgery/recovery.  Even with these thoughts on my mind, I also realize there's no point to worrying or stressing until we see what the next echo shows in 4 months.  I am on the watch right now for any red flags from James that might indicate he is struggling-mostly more frequent fatigue during play, a greater desire to nap at odd times, etc. Otherwise though-I know I need to stay level-headed while being practical about what we can do to be prepared.  Part of me wants it over with; part of me wants more time; all of me wants none of this for James, but that's not what we were dealt, and for the most part, I'm okay with that.

This is a good image to end with.  I love James' beads of courage.  I have started to talk to James about it, about his "heart line", and about his little heart bead.  This is such a good reminder to me that James is so very strong, and there is so much hope in family, our amazing medical team, and the Lord.  It gives me and our family courage to press forward, even if its into the unknown.  I'll just focus on keeping the faith and praying for continual strength.

Another Slight Job Change

Seems like there's lots of stuff going on with jobs lately!  This is not huge news or anything like that, but just kind of nice.  I have been interviewing teachers for jobs at Educate Online since December.  I have been training for the last month to take over this interviewing position on my own (I was just supporting one of our lead instructors in the interview).  Now I'm doing interviews on my own, and thoroughly enjoy the process.  Anyhow, I got a promotion letter today for the position of "Candidate Selection Lead"...which is what I've been doing, except apparently I get to be the "lead" person over the interviewing team. That's kind of cool!  This position has been an easy fit for me, and I enjoy being able to do these different things with EO, without feeling like I am putting myself in a position to get burned by changes in the company.  It feels nice to be recognized for doing a good job.  So that's my "made me feel good" moment of the day.  :)

Caution to the Wind!

Jared threw caution to the wind today and put James down for nap in his big boy bed.  I was not sure if I was so ready for that, but there it was:  a beginning, and I am not one to backtrack if it starts.  Jared came and told me what he had done and said James was just laying, not messing anything up at all. An hour and a half later, and the room was not so organized....typical!

Later that night, I put him to bed in the big boy bed!  Again-no going back! He thought it was cool, and was smiling his head off-"Score!", I thought!  After 2 hours of putting him back in his bed every 10-15 minutes, he just started crying, and I felt so bad for him!  But its part of the learning process, and after another fun half hour of the 10 minute game, he fell asleep, albeit by his door.  I managed to get him back in his bed without him waking up, and everything was peaceful until the following morning.
Night 2:  complete turn around.  I only had to put him back to bed 3 times before he was out.  I am sure he was awake for a good half an hour before I got him up the next morning, but his room was still in decent shape.  A serious sucess!
***Update as of 2/5, as I am writing this in retrospect!  The bed is still going great, and James loves sleeping in it!  He definitely likes to play with everything in his room though, and he has figured out how to turn his lamp on with no assistance. Thus, his room has turned into a royal mess on more than one occasion.  One morning, I found him on top of his changing table, peeling the borders off his wall frames....all part of the process of course, we are just working on continually emphasizing the routine, especially "if you make a mess, you clean it up".  Doing great, honestly!

Yea for Jared!

We found out today Jared got a new position at Walden that he had applied and interviewed for!  He is super excited about this because it means he does not have to be on the phones all day in a seriously under-staffed department.  It has been weighing on him for a while, so when this position finally opened, he jumped on it, networked like crazy, and interviewed in spectacular fashion (as he always does).  So he will be moving from academic advising to being an Enrollment Specialist, heading up the education and health services departments.  He officially starts on Feb 10th for training purposes.  For all intents and purposes, it is a lateral move in terms of benefits and pay, but the scheuling is nicer:  4 days a week in the office, 1 day a week working from home, and he'll be done by 4pm every day.  That will really maximize his time with the kids, allow me more flexibility with my work schedule, and take a lot of stress off of him.  All in all-this is FANTASTIC news for Jared and I am so proud of him for being so good at what he does and working so hard in general.  This is not his dream job by any means, but this is a good step for him and for us as a family; we are very grateful things have worked out this way.

Congratulations to Jared!
